Children pick this one out themselves. The four smiley patches sit high on the front where they actually show, and because the bag underneath is plain black it still passes at schools that are strict about what a bag looks like.
It is made from a light water-resistant nylon, so an unexpected downpour on the walk home does not soak the books inside. The main compartment takes A4 exercise books and a file lying flat, and the zipped front pocket is where the pens and the lunch money end up.
The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable, and there is a grab handle at the top for hanging it on a peg. A small charm loop sits on the side zip, which most children fill within a week.

Which size to take
Small suits nursery and lower primary, where the bag is mostly a lunch box and a book or two. Medium is what most primary children end up with. Large is for upper primary and secondary, where there is a file and a water bottle to carry as well. If you are unsure, come and hold them against her back in the shop, it takes two minutes.
Looking after it
Sponge it down with soapy water and dry it in the shade. Keep it out of the washing machine, it pulls the padding out of shape and it never recovers.
