A child’s foot does not grow evenly, it goes in jumps, usually over a school holiday. A square or tapered toe leaves nowhere for that to happen and the shoe is finished the week he comes back.
The toe box on this one is deliberately round and high, with space in front and above the toes. It buys you the jump, and in the meantime the toes are not curled under, which is how children end up with problems later.

Getting the fit right
Measure at the end of the day rather than first thing, feet swell by the afternoon and a shoe fitted at seven in the morning can be tight by three. Leave about half a centimetre between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Come to the shop and we will check it with him standing up, which is the only way that tells you anything.
Looking after them
Wipe the dust off with a damp cloth when he gets home and polish them properly once a week. Dry them in the shade, never in direct sun, it hardens the leather and then it cracks along the flex point.
