Two straps exist for a particular child. You know the one, the shoe is fastened at seven and hanging half off by lunchtime. A second strap across the top of the foot stops the heel lifting and the whole thing stays put.
Each strap adjusts independently, which also helps with a high instep. Tighten the lower one and leave the upper looser, or the other way round, and the shoe fits a shape that a single strap simply cannot.

Getting the fit right
Measure at the end of the day rather than first thing, feet swell by the afternoon and a shoe fitted at seven in the morning can be tight by three. Leave about half a centimetre between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Come to the shop and we will check it with him standing up, which is the only way that tells you anything.
Care
A damp cloth after school and a proper polish on Sunday evening will keep them looking right until the end of term. If they get soaked, stuff them with newspaper and leave them somewhere shaded to dry slowly.
